A Bunch Of Inmates In Florida Take Care Of Abandoned Animals At The Prison
Orange is the New Black has give prison an interesting name. They’ve somehow made it look fun and exciting, while revealing it’s terrifying nature at the same time. Most it’s dramatizations, but one thing they do have correct is the fact that inmates are often given jobs. Sometimes the jobs are handed out to help the prison function, others are given to people to help them waster their time, and some are actually used to benefit the inmates. One prison that’s using jobs to help the inmates is the Monroe County Jail in south Florida.
They don’t give inmates any old jobs though. Instead of cleaning the toilets or working the kitchens, these inmates get to run a zoo. Yep, you read that right. These convicted inmates actually have some of the coolest jobs ever, and according to the guards and the prisoners themselves, it really does help them. Not only do they feel useful, they also feel like they’re making a great contribution.
They’ve Got A Good Gig!
The animals that they take care of are no ordinary animals. They’re the ones that have been abandoned left for dead, or lost and never found. Some were found in the Everglades, on the side of the road or wandering around near the property, but they all have a place to call home now.
Here’s Ghost, The Blind Horse
They’ve got everything form ducks to horses to sloths to gators, and each one gets extra special attention. Some of the animals are hurt, blind or disabled, which is why the jail called in a special guard, Curator Jeanne Selander to help. She’s been working with animals forever, but inmates not so much. She’s taken to the farm quickly and now even coordinates bi-monthly open houses so that visitors can come interact with al the critters. Check out their amazing work below!
